What materials can I broach?
A wide variety of materials commonly cut during machining can also be broached using tooling from Slater Tools. These include soft metals such as aluminum and brass, alloy metals, plastics and carbon fiber.
Common materials for rotary broaching include:
  • Aluminum
  • Brass
  • 12L14
  • Alloy Steel
  • Stainless Steel
  • Titanium
Specifications in the Rotary Broaching Catalog will assist you in setting up speeds and feeds to cut these materials. However, these are not the only materials suitable for rotary broaching. Low carbon and leaded materials are good for broaching. The higher the carbon content in the material, the more difficult it becomes to broach. Tensil strength of the material plays a big role in how the material will respond to broaching. The higher the tensil strength, the more difficult it may be to broach.

Although we may not recommend broaching certain materials, this does not mean they cannot be broached. Sometimes by opening up your pre-drill diameter or broaching a shallow depth, rotary broaching can be accomplished. Broaching these materials may reduce tool life.
